"Your material is really amazing. It has completely changed the way I coach.  We have close to twice the points as the second place team in our midget girls league.  We’ve won the biggest major tourney in the area and we’re heading to Brantford for the Walter Gretzky tourney this weekend (they swept it).  Your info has been my secret weapon quite honestly. The league directors and many of the coaches think I’m some kind of mastermind or that I must have played hockey at a very high level…" - Frank Macchi
You, a Regional Champion Coach?
Dear Coach:

Working with youth athletes is full of ups and downs, fun and frustrations. But we do it all for the same reasons:

+ To help young athletes develop leadership, hard work, commitment, dedication, and character.

+ To give back to a game that has been meaningful in your life.

+ To teach grit and determination

+ To feel the thrill of competition with our kids... the excitement of winning, the disappointment of losing

+ To develop players that perform at a high level, play beautiful hockey, and win championships

YES.... You can be a regional champion coach, just like hundreds of other coaches winning championships with our material.
Take a Look at What I'm Talking About...
Rainer Prager
"I have been using your material for at least 5 years. Your drills and systems help our coaching staff with progressions and efficiencies throughout the year. This year our Midget A Queens (U16) have achieved some of their goals winning two Championships, U19 in Chicago and U16 in Madison. They have come a long way and competed against the U19 for the better part of the year."
Barry L. Linetsky

"I've used your material since 2012 coaching my two daughters. Here are the results:

2012-2013 - Midget Champions (older daughter)
2013-2014 - Bantam Champions (younger daughter)
2014-2015 - Bantam Champions (younger daughter)
2016-2017 - Midget Champions (younger daughter)
2017-2018 - Midget Championship Finalists (younger daughter)"

Tony Rino

"I wanted to thank you for all of your help over the years. Your drills are easy to understand and they always have good progressions to other drills. I have been using them for the past 5 years and I have seen great improvements in their individual skills and team play."

David Jamael
"Year 2 of using your drills and practices. We won our division this year after a slow start 0-11-2 but continued using your drills to improve skill. And we won peewee A last year in our division!"
Daniel Weir
"This past weekend we ended up winning our early bird tourney going undefeated and beating 4 teams in including the semis and finals that were in top 6 in omha play downs last year so it was very good competition which is all you want. "
Brad Miklosovic
"I have been using your drills, concepts and systems for the past 5 years coaching youth hockey. Using your drills and systems I have seen tremendous skill progression and hockey IQ in my players. Thank you for your passion and commitment to amateur hockey."
Bob Adams
"Just thought I’d send you a quick note during this busy time of the season to let you know we successfully followed-up the Can/Am tournament victory in Montreal with a State Championship yesterday!....a million thanks for everything from your personal feedback to this website with the drills library that is my bible, as you know, etc...."

"Your material and information is a huge part of this success. I’ve been using this since you started it and truly believe in what I use. I tweaked it for what I need but the foundation is all there. I advise any coach to look at what Weiss Tech Hockey has to offer."
Coaching in Today's Game
Many coaches in today's game are working in a half-ice setting––or sometimes even smaller. This is a challenging environment to create the development and tempo our teams need.

Have you ever been in a situation where you tried running a drill that just didn't go well?

Or have you ever found yourself struggling for an entire practice? Or multiple practices?

You're trying to make it worthwhile for the players, but it's just not happening... the development just isn't going well...

As coaches, we worry about what to teach next, and how we're going to do it in the most effective way possible.

We shoulder the responsibility of the development of 15 young players every season. It's our job to make sure they get the instruction and direction they need... and if they don't, we have failed them as a coach. A lot rides on whether or not we do our jobs well––not just in terms of wins and losses, but in the overall development of these youngsters!

It's hard enough to develop players the right way, even under ideal circumstances. Doing it in a small-space setting makes it even more challenging.

We all know the impact a good coach can make on a team. Professional sports are riddled with stories of teams that haven't won a championship in 10, 20, or 30 years, until a good coach comes along and propels the team to heights, and sure enough... they start winning championships again.

The performance of a team is directly related to the coaching. That's why we see that same pattern over and over again. Give a good coach enough time with a program, and he or she will have the team playing better hockey, and winning more championships before too long.

Over enough time, good coaching wins out. Every time.
INTRODUCING OUR NEW HALF-ICE DRILL BOOK:
101 Half-Ice Drills - Volume 1
Our new drill book, 101 Half-Ice Drills - Vol. 1, is designed as a springboard to more effective coaching.

This book contains 101 drills specifically designed for half-ice and small-space settings. Your players will love doing these drills because they will feel themselves getting better, and having a ton of fun in the process. This will be a key to future success for your team.
You see, good coaching includes getting BUY IN from your players. When your players are working hard, having fun, and feeling themselves improve, they BELIEVE in you as a coach. They TRUST that you're leading them in the right direction, and they will DO whatever you ask them to do! This process creates a positive snowball effect... because the more they DO what you ask, the more SUCCESS they will have, and the more willing they'll be to keep following you as you quickly lead them up to new levels of excellence!
Our new eBook contains 101 battle-tested half-ice drills that you can use immediately in your coaching!

How to 3X or 4X Your On-Ice Productivity
Look, I've been doing this for a long time. Over my life time in the hockey world, I have found that good coaches build practices that are 3 or 4 times as effective as their less-productive competitors.

This means that in a typical week, a good coach, using the right drills and training methods, will get the equivalent of 10 hours development in 3 hours of ice time. Think about what it would mean if you could 3X, or 4X your productivity, week after week, over the course of a season. Or over the course of multiple seasons!

I'll talk more about this in a minute, but first, let me explain how I got where I am today...

I was fortunate to have a phenomenal hockey upbringing as a youngster in Toronto, Canada. I had world-class instructors from a young age, and quickly became a student of the game. I paid close attention to how these ex-pro coaches instructed me, what drill progressions they used, and how they developed players from point A to point B.

I began coaching as an assistant skills instructor back in 1996, when I was just 15 years old. Again, I paid close attention to the coaches around me, and began creating a library of drills even back then. I continued this practice throughout my life... and continue it to this day.

As an adult I've been doing online hockey instruction and consulting since 2008, and have gained even more insights. I regularly swap drills, experiences, ideas, and methodologies with coaches from everywhere... USA, Canada, Russia, Europe. Over the years it has been a privilege to connect with literally tens of thousands of coaches world-wide.
Pictures from a recent trip to Moscow, Russia. Left: Jeremy Weiss discusses youth hockey development in a TV interview for a KHL spot. Middle: Finnish Strength and Conditioning coach Jussi Kurtti, with Russian hockey legend Alexander Boikov, and Coaching expert Jeremy Weiss after presenting to a group of youth hockey coaches. Right: Jeremy Weiss and pro coach Nikolay Kuznetsov
I've been invited to present to various coaching groups and organizations here in North America, and have traveled overseas a few times to present to coaches in Moscow, Russia and Minsk, Belarus. I also do a lot of virtual instruction, via Skype, to organizations all over the world.

The drills I've included in this book are an International Compilation. They are all "battle tested" and proven to work well. These drills create the type of development that leads to championships.

Here is a quick rundown of what you'll find in this half-ice drill book:
WHAT'S INSIDE...
  • COMPETITION DRILLS: Great coaches incorporate competition drills into their practices to push their players to compete at game speed with game-like pressure. We've included a great competition section in this book with agility races, battle drills, and game simulations.

Competition drills naturally encourage high work ethic, and give the players opportunities to perform in intense situations. You'll be able to use these types of drills to keep the players engaged, and to develop specific tactics based on the team's needs.
  • FUN DRILLS: Sometimes you just need to let the kids have fun. When done right, fun drills can be useful for skill development as well. It's kind of like hiding the dog's medicine in a piece of cheese (maybe I'm the only one who's done that?? you get the point).

Fun Drills can also be a great reward at the end of a solid practice. The kids can unwind, try new things, and still be working hard.
  • PASSING DRILLS: The book contains some awesome passing drills that will help you develop your passing skills and patterns in various situations.

Many coaches feel stifled when it comes to passing development in a half-ice setting. It's true, some of your passing patterns are limited because of the space restrictions. But it can still be done, with a little creativity.

We've included a wide variety of passing drills that can be used in a team setting, or a small group setting, depending on the circumstance.
  • SHOOTING DRILLS: Running the right shooting drills will lead to increased goal scoring. Our shooting drills will lead to more offensive production. Period. The key is to make sure your players are getting meaningful reps in, without too much waiting time between those reps.

I recommend setting up stations, and utilizing multiple nets, if possible. For example, we could run a 5-man shooting drill in one end (see the Mancini Drill below), and put two additional stations in the neutral zone. Rotate stations every 10 minutes, and everyone gets their reps in.
  • SKATING DRILLS: Skating and technical development must play a part in every practice. As always, the tricky part in a half-ice setting is to get the work in without too much wait time in line.

The book has some great skating drills that will promote speed and agility so your team will still be able to outskate their competition, even though they're practicing on half-ice!
  • STICKHANDLING DRILLS: There's lots of room for creativity here. In fact, small spaces can be even more beneficial when it comes to developing nice hands.

I recommend incorporating a little bit of everything with stickhandling... tight spaces, open spaces, underhandling, overhandling... and be creative with the obstacles you use on the ice. We've included plenty of cool drill options that'll give your players the hands they need to get pucks and make plays.
  • SYSTEMS DRILLS: Developing positional elements in a half-ice setting can be challenging to many coaches.

We've included a great systems section that covers Defensive Zone tactics, Offensive Entries, Odd-Man Rushes, and Special Teams. These drills, along with the skills drills, make for a powerful combination that will have your team dominating the competition!
  • WARM-UP DRILLS: I like to start most practices with some technical skill work, then jump into a warm-up drill that is a direct continuation of our skill acquisition for that day.

Our warm-up drills kill multiple birds with a single stone, meaning they get the players loose... but also develop passing, timing, shooting, or other essential skills & tactics. Using multi-purpose drills is one way that we can be so much more productive than our competition.

After the warm-up, we dive into whatever additional team concepts need to be addressed for that specific session.
Slovakian Agility Race
One of the Slovakian coaches who uses our training material sent me this drill back in 2015. I love it for a number of different reasons.

This is a high-tempo agility race that develops speed, agility, and encourages the competitive edge. Because of the puck placement, it also forces physical play as players battle for the puck.

Slovakian Agility Race: A high-tempo agility race that develops speed, and encourages the competitive edge

Board Pass Relay: A fun relay race that incorporates bank passes to teach the kids learn the angles of the boards.

Board Pass Relay
I developed this one as a fun way for players to learn the angles and stick-mechanics of the bank pass. Since it's a relay race, the players are competing while working on fundamentals.
2 on 0 From Circle with Drop Pass
Phenomenal passing drill in the right setting. Run it as shown with your more advanced teams, or simplify it for your youngsters.

Combines high-tempo skating with multiple pass types, and fun criss-crossing skating patterns. Plus, you can add a defenseman or two to create a 2 on 1 or 2 on 2 attack.

2 on 0 From Circle with Drop Pass: A great drill to work on various passing and support concepts in a half-ice setting.

Mancini Drill: An awesome 5-man shooting drill that works on one-timers, deflections, rebounding, and strategic shot placement.

Mancini Drill
This is a great, tight-space, competitive shooting drill that works on one-timers, deflections, and strategic shot placement.

The kids have a blast with this drill because they get to play with various shooting scenarios, and it's useful for the goalies as well.
Criss Cross Pivots
I developed this as a half-ice modification of a different skating drill. In this setup we have 3 players working at once, and they get out of each other's way fast enough to send the next 3 players pretty fast.

The pivot work in this drill is especially useful for defensemen as they manage the gap through the neutral zone.

Criss Cross Pivots: A solid skating drill with 3 players working at the same time. Minimal time waiting in line.

Dekes with a Loop: A simple drill to give players the opportunity to stickhandle in various skating patterns.

Dekes with a Loop
I love this stickhandling drill for the fact that it's simple, yet modifiable for a lot of creative possibilities. Add various deke types, mohawks or pivots, or even throw some new obstacles on the ice.

You can either let the players finish with a shot, or have the coach work with the goalies while the players focus exclusively on their stickhandling.
2 on 1 from a Breakout Pass
Designed to work on breakout skating & passing patterns, timing & support tactics, and finishes with an odd-man rush 2 on 1, forcing the defenseman to explode up ice and pivot to manage the gap.

Systems drills that incorporate individual skills and tactics let you cover so much ground and make for more effective practices.

2 on 1 From a Breakout Pass: A great drill that works on breakout elements, and finishes with a 2 on 1.

Slovakian Power Turns & Pivots: A nice skating drill to warm-up power turns, pivots, and puckhandling.

Slovakian Power Turns & Pivots
A creative warm-up drill I picked up in 2014 from one of our coaches in Slovakia. This one hits multiple individual skills, and can be modified to hone in on your team's specific needs.

Do this drill with or without the puck. It incorporates power turns, crossovers, pivots, and backward skating. Modifications could include mohawk turns, require the players to face one direction the entire drill, or even add a pass or two to the next player in line!

Gary Crandall
"This team never even made playoff last year, so all-in-all a good season to have tied for top place in regular season play, won the Silver Stick Regional Tournament and made it to the finals of our league.

I have learned a lot thanks to your programs. I appreciate everything you have have done for me and your excellent programs. I can't wait to really take full advantage of your programs next year."
Fred Wiebe

"Weiss Tech Hockey has helped me grow as a coach over the past few years. Last season we won every game at the provincial tournament and it wasn't even close. Scores were 10-4, 8-1, 23-0 in the round robin. Then we beat Strathcona in the semi-finals 12-3 and Edson in the finals 9-2 to win the championship!!

We won all 3 possible banners; first ever Atom zone 1 'A' championship, first ever Atom Provincial Champions banner, and first ever 'A' level provincial banner in our organization of any level!!

Bryan LaManna
"Your material and information is a huge part of this success. I’ve been using this since you started it and truly believe in what I use. I tweaked it for what I need but the foundation is all there. I advise any coach to look at what Weiss Tech Hockey has to offer."

"Thank you very much for the materials that you send. There are so many interesting points for learning and improving the development of the player and the team.

I am sending you a photo of our team Sveton, who plays in the amateur League in the Master group, here players are playing who do not have an existing contract MHL, VHL, KHL. This year we took 2nd place."
Shawn O’Leary

"Hi Jeremy, would like to thank you, for my first year of coaching your drills made planning practices easy to understand. Our year was very successful, playing in 3 tournaments and medaled in all 3 and we are the Bantam Tc Wallaceburg Lakers champions!"

Blair Whitford
"Continue the great work! I've been head coach for 3 years and with your great tools and guidance (couldn't have done it without your work), here's our track record:

Year 1 -
Won Season Championship, Lost in Finals of Playoffs
Year 2 - Lost in Semi-Finals to a very Dominant Team who only lost 1 game (us)
Year 3 - Won Playoff Championship"
Cory Sul
"Thanks Jeremy! Big fan of your stuff. I use a lot of it as a basis for the things i do. Last year the kids went from 10 place at Christmas to winning the championship at the end of the year.    In the final we played the the other team from our area that had went undefeated all year and beat them 3 games to 1.  They didn’t know what hit them!"
Kevin Martens
"I just wanted to send a quick email to say a big "THANK YOU". I took your training course online and purchased the Manuals prior to the season. We implemented the systems and practice plans and our team had great success this year. Our club team won the Saskatoon City League Championship and our Provincial Team won the Peewee A Championship for Saskatchewan. Again, thank you for all of your support online and the fantastic resources. I wish you a terrific summer."
Jamie Fuller
"We were a bantam house team and decided as an organization too move to single A travel hockey this year. As a coach I was looking to step up a notch and found your systems most appealing. I purchased your drill and play book, completed your coaches training online module and watched about every video you have on Youtube. I am proud to tell you we finished 13-6-1 for the season and 3rd overall. Not too bad for our first year in travel hockey.

I was amazed at how fast the kids picked up the play book and how eager they were to learn systems play. Even our parents asked how we got so good!
