How to Get Fast and Shifty Through Off-Ice Agility Training, so You Can Accelerate Faster, Cut Harder, and Make 'Ankle-Breaking' Dekes... All Without Setting Foot on the Ice!
Dear Coach,

In yesterday's video we talked about the importance of off-ice training for hockey players.

I called it "THE WHY."

We looked at how Anatoli Tarasov, the father of Russian Hockey, turned the hockey world upside down with his unique development techniques and strategies, both on and off the ice.

He was doing things the world had never seen before.

Tarasov's unique off-ice training methods (which included some crazy things like gymnastics, juggling, and even Russian Ballet) led the Soviets to 9 straight world championships under his leadership! In fact his legacy continued on for more than 2 decades of Soviet dominance, even after his coaching career ended.

Understanding why hockey players should be training off the ice opens the doors to gain major advantages over your opponents, but ONLY if you put that understanding into action.

And I'm going to show you in today's video a simple drill that takes less than 3 minutes per day to complete.

This drill is done at home, off the ice, and is guaranteed to improve foot speed so you can win more puck races, slip more checks, change directions, make more deceptive dekes with the puck, and destroy your opponent on the transition.

But first I want to share a little more about my own hockey history... because it is very much connected to what I told you yesterday about Anatoli Tarasov.
How I Learned Hockey From 'Defected' Czechoslovakian Coach, Martin Maglay—3 Time IIHF Gold Medalist and the First Man to SMUGGLE Secret Soviet Hockey Training Techniques Outside of Russia
It all started when I was a youngster growing up in Toronto, Canada.

You see, after my first season of hockey in 1987, I started working with a really unique skills coach. And without knowing it, I was being trained in these Soviet techniques from a very young age.

My primary skills instructor was Martin Maglay, a Czechoslovakian, who had defected to Canada in the early 1980's before the fall of communism. Martin was more than just a skills coach for me. He was a close family friend and a mentor as well.

I still remember him sitting on the couch in my living room, telling the story of how he fled communism, and became a fugitive for three months, hiding out in a small loft in Zurich... the whole time looking over his shoulder, eluding the authorities and team officials who were trying to bring him back to Czechoslovakia.

As a member of the Czech national U20 team, Martin made his escape at age 19 during a shopping trip in Aigle, Switzerland, where the Czechs had been taking part in an international tournament in 1981.
He Told His Teammates He Needed to Return to a Store to Buy a Guitar,
But as Soon as He Got Around the Corner...

He ran to a train station, jumped into a taxi and told the driver to drive him as far as his money—100 Swiss francs—would take him.

After hiding out in a friend's loft for about three months in Zurich, Martin was finally able to smuggle out his development secrets, landing himself in Toronto with the help of Toronto Maple Leaf general manager Punch Imlach and goalie coach Johnny Bower.

Footage of Martin Maglay's development methods, pulled from my personal archives. Maglay was a 3 Time gold medalist in IIHF play, with the Czechoslovakian National Team.
After a brief stint with the Leafs, Martin opened a hockey school, and was the first to teach these Soviet development techniques to the Canadians.

That's when my dad found him.

Martin's training was unlike ANYTHING the Canadians had ever seen.

His development style was amazing, but his marketing needed help. At the time, my dad was in marketing and brand management for big names like Coca Cola, American Express, Proctor & Gamble, HMV, and others... so he helped Martin improve his marketing, and grow his schools into a real business.

I was trained under for 3 to 4 hours a week for over 6 years before my family moved to the States.

Martin also worked with my team as a skills consultant during the season, and I attended his development camps every summer. The summer camps were awesome because we got to do all sorts of crazy off-ice training.

I didn't realize it at the time, but Martin was running us through a very Eastern European style of strength and conditioning. I later recognized it as very similar to Anatoli Tarasov's training.

Our off-ice conditioning sessions looked a lot like this one...
Footage from the Soviet's off-ice conditioning (this is the same type of training I grew up with under Martin Maglay)
The Tale of Two Countries... Czechoslovakia & the Soviet Union
Did you know that there were only two countries that ever won the IIHF World Championships between 1963 and 1986?

By now, you'd probably guess the Soviets to be one of them. The Soviets won 18 World Championships from 1963 to 1986... But there was another country that was also competitive... Care to guess who?

It was the Czechoslovakians.

The only country to ever beat the Soviets in a World Championship between 1963 and 1986 was Czechoslovakia, who won 4 World Championship gold medals during that span.

So the World Championships literally bounced back and forth between the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia for more than two decades!

It was complete hockey dominance by two teams.
IIHF World Championship Medalists by year. Shows Soviet and Czech dominance for more than 2 decades.
In fact... from 1954 to 1991 the Soviets never failed to medal in ANY IIHF tournament they competed in.

And this was my hockey upbringing!

This is the training style I grew up with, and this is what I've been studying the past 20 years as a coach! The training methods I'm sharing with you here are the reason these teams were so dominant for so long.
How the Dot Drill Improves Your Team's Speed and Agility
in Less Than 3 Minutes a Day of Off-Ice Training
If you want to dominate the game like the Soviets and the Czechs did for more than two decades...

Speed & Agility are not only important, they're FOUNDATIONAL.

Remember what Anatoli Tarasov said about speed and agility:
"A good hockey player must first be a good athlete. Athleticism means speed, strength, and agility. This means we must double our efforts, especially in the spurts."
Can you imagine?

A 9-time world champion coach says his team should DOUBLE THEIR EFFORTS in speed & agility development!

What does that show us about the importance of speed & agility in the mind of Anatoli Tarasov?

One of my favorite techniques for improving agility is with the Dot Drill.
  • The Dot Drill is awesome because it can be done at home, away from the rink. So expensive ice time can be used to develop other skills.
  • It takes less than 3 minutes a day (even less once you get good at it!). It's fast and easy to make time for it. If you have time to check your text messages, you have time to improve your agility.
  • No gear needed. You can set this up using sidewalk chalk or spray paint. Or you can purchase a dot drill mat on Amazon if you're looking for a more permanent option.
  • It's trackable. Trackability increases motivation. Players see their scores improving, and their results translating to on-ice performance, and they become INTRINSICALLY motivated.
In less than 3 minutes per day, you can develop the agility to make 'ankle-breaking' dekes like Pavel Datsyuk. Yes, the stick work is important... but take a look at his feet! That's what real agility does for you.
How to Do the Dot Drill
The Dot Drill is simple to set up and simple to do.

First step is to draw out the dots. I recommend starting with sidewalk chalk. If you want a more permanent option, you can use spray paint, or purchase a mat from Amazon.
You can make your own Dot Drill if you don't have a mat. This one is made with sidewalk chalk right on the sidewalk.
STEP 1: Measure out a 2' by 3' rectangle, as shown in the picture.

STEP 2: Draw a dot on each corner of the rectangle with a 5" diameter.

STEP 3: With a straight stick, draw an 'X' through the rectangle, from corner to corner.

STEP 4: Draw the fifth dot where the 'X' crosses in the middle.

That's it!

It only takes about 5 minutes to draw it out, and now you're all set.

This is a great option that will last a few days before you have to retrace the lines. Once you're ready to make your setup permanent, use spray paint instead of chalk.
Now that you're set up, here's how the routine works. Remember to time yourself and record your score every day! There are 5 movements, and each movement is done 6 times:
  • 1 - Hour Glass (x6): One foot on each of the bottom dots, jump both feet to the middle dot together, then jump to one foot on each of the top two dots. Jump both feet back to the middle dot together, then jump back to starting position. Facing forward the whole time.
  • 2 - Right Foot (x6): On right foot only, athlete jumps into the middle dot, out to the top right dot, over to the top left dot, back to the middle dot, out to the bottom left dot, and over to the bottom right dot. Facing forward the whole time.
  • 3 - Left Foot (x6): On left foot only, athlete jumps into the middle dot, out to the top right dot, over to the top left dot, back to the middle dot, out to the bottom left dot, and over to the bottom right dot. Facing forward the whole time.
  • 4 - Slalom (x6): With both feet together, athlete jumps into the middle dot, out to the top right dot, over to the top left dot, back to the middle dot, out to the bottom left dot, and over to the bottom right dot. Facing forward the whole time.
  • 5 - Hour Glass with Spin (x6): One foot on each of the bottom dots, jump both feet to the middle dot together, then jump to one foot on each of the top two dots. Jump and spin, landing both feet on the top two dots. Jump both feet back to the middle dot together, then jump back to starting position. Jump and spin again.
It's Almost too Simple!
You might be looking at the Dot Drill thinking...

"It's almost too simple... they're just jumping around on a few small dots."

But you'll be surprised at the improvement you'll see after just a few weeks of your players doing this!

You'll start to notice they become quicker off the line. They're more explosive changing directions. They can stop and start with more exactness and precision. Their crossovers become quicker and they start using it to drive the net harder. Your defensemen can hit the brakes and evade checkers... resulting in better breakouts.

You'll start noticing more puck races being won, players being stronger on their feet, playing with more confidence. And ultimately, you'll start realizing you're winning more games.

Sound far fetched? TRY IT AND SEE FOR YOURSELF!

But remember, the Dot Drill is just one of the dozens of the advanced training techniques you'll get when you sign up for my new Championship Hockey Conditioning course that I'm launching this month.
Introducing Championship Hockey Conditioning—a 12-Week Off-Ice Training Course for Speed, Strength, Size, Explosiveness, and Agility
Once You Sign Up You'll Get Access To...
  • Championship Hockey Conditioning – A full program focusing on primary muscle groups & energy systems that improve speed, strength, size, agility, explosiveness, and recovery time; allowing you and your team's players to become physically dominant on the ice.
  • Over 105 of simple to follow, yet EFFECTIVE online instructional videos ensure your team gets the proper form for all exercise movements, and that the sets and reps schemes are performed correctly without you having to teach them – keeping improvement safe and consistent.
  • Program Variations for U11, 12-13, and 14+ – You get THREE program variations to accommodate all age ranges. U11 uses mostly bodyweight exercises and can be done from home. 12-13 introduces players to weightlifting with less aggressive weights and rep schemes. 14+ is for more experienced and physically mature athletes, incorporates heavier weights, and more complex movements. You get access to all three age groups, so the program grows with your player.
  • Tracking Worksheets for Individuals so that everyone's workouts organized and track your team's improvement printable worksheets. Seeing improvement over time also improves consistency and motivation (see my tour video below for more details)
  • Testing Worksheets for Teams – super useful for coaches who are looking to use this program for their whole team. Players can do their workouts each day on their own, then meet as a team semi-regularly for a testing session. Coaches use these sheets to track their players' results.
  • Fun "Daily Challenges" Combine Conditioning & Skill Work – Can you snipe 5 top rights in a row? Can you do it while you're already gassed from doing burpees? (Doing workouts like these allows your team to execute while under stress or exhaustion, builds character, and turns you into a clutch performer.)
  • A U11 Program that Doesn't Require a Gym – (the 12-13 and 14+ programs require some off-ice training aids and some basic equipment). Any solid strength and conditioning program will eventually get to the point where you'll need weights and other equipment. Fortunately, this is pretty cheap and easy in most places. A basic gym membership or a barbell set will cover everything you need.
  • Member Portal Where Your Team Can Login to See Video Demos of All the Movements – Simply follow the directives in the video demonstrations for each movement to ensure safe and effective technique
  • Platform for Your Team to Report Results & Interact with Other Athletes – I've built in commenting capabilities for each workout, so you can report your results and congratulate your teammates, and other members of the program, for a workout well done! (You can see this shown in the video below as Facebook comments)
  • Improved Speed, Strength, Size, Explosiveness, Agility, Flexibility, and Recovery Time! – Anatoli Tarasov said "A good hockey player must first be a good athlete. Athleticism means speed, strength, and agility. This means we must double our efforts, especially in the spurts." Tarasov was right, and this program is built to enable players to accomplish just that!
  • Permanent Lifetime Access to the Whole 12-Week Program for just $47 – Each registration fee includes 15 slots, so you can invite your whole team to participate together and keep dominating season after season, year after year!
You can get access to Championship Hockey Conditioning today, put it through it paces for your team, apply the techniques, have your players do the worksheets each week, and track their results. Go ahead and try it out for multiple seasons...

And if within the next 730 days you don't get into the top 3rd of your league I'll double your money back. All you have to do is send an email to [email protected] and I will literally send you $94.

That's how confident I am that Championship Hockey Conditioning works.

All you have to do is click the green button above and you'll be taken to a page where you'll have plenty of time to make your final decision.

Tomorrow we're doing something a little different.

I'm putting on a live webinar all about summer development strategies. You see, almost every question coming into my inbox this time of year revolves around summer development.

Coaches are looking for training strategies and ideas, ways to keep their kids progressing during the summer... camps, tournaments, strength training, conditioning...

They want to know how they can put all this information together into a complete training program or system that's proven to work, and that propels teams into the championships—no matter their current position in the rankings... even if they've never even made playoffs in the last 5 years.

You see, the details in the development system are what separates the top coach who drives his or her team to victory, from the coach who hasn't even won a bronze medal in the last decade.

The cool thing is, once you have such a system, you can gain a MASSIVE advantage over your competition.

I'll send you the login details tomorrow for the webinar. So keep an eye on your inbox.

Cheers!
